00 Welcome back to another special episode of Careful Boys. Today, we have somebody very unique with us. We have a stand-up comedian and broadcast journalist and in-arena host Haley Brooks with us. >> [cheering] >> Thank you. >> Big time Big time Patriots fan, right? >> Don't even get me started. ANYWAY, I JUST GOT HERE. >> [laughter] >> NO, SHE'S FROM PHILLY, so obviously. >> How did you guys meet? >> Okay, so funny enough, I went to see this show over at the Composers Room and it's called Haunted Brunch. And it's literally you get a bunch of brunch food and you watch a variety show of like Halloween-themed things like dancing, acro, and then there's obviously there's this captivating comedian that's hosting it holding the whole thing together. >> And it's during brunch time? >> Yeah. >> Yeah, it's during brunch time, yeah. Yeah, I randomly went because because

51 Hirano and Mike, my other friend Mark had a friend that was in the show. And I'm like, this girl is really funny. I thought I thought she was performing like it was her show. I thought that it was her like review. And then this is her, Haley Brooks. >> Or Elvirus as I am in Haunted Brunch. Elvirus, Drew Scarymore, Beetlejuice Day, Megan's body ody ody. >> And then and then like afterwards, I'm like, oh, this she does a bunch of different things. You do What's the stuff that you do in sports particularly? >> So, currently I'm an in-arena host. So, you know the hype man at the games like everybody get up and make some noise. Sponsored by Toyota. That's me. >> So, you're not really on camera, you're just off camera, but then you see the crowd going crazy. >> On camera? Yeah, I'm on camera, yeah. Like you know before a game starts AND IT'S LIKE LIKE GETTING EVERY GETTING THE ENERGY up >> Like Bruce Buffer? >> Little hit story, Bruce Buffer.

41 >> Bruce Buffer in UFC like >> Yeah, so so like the the the PA does like most of the like player intros and stuff like that. But when like you have those like all nice or like on field games or like the just like a a to be like everybody get the energy up and things like that. That's That's what I do. >> Ah, I see. >> yeah. And you oh also I might I must add this because it's probably the the coolest thing is she does roast battles. >> Oh, yeah. >> hell? She's a champion roast battler. >> I got a belt. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, so what's your titles that you have now? What did you >> I am the Intercontinental Roast Champion at Roastamania. >> How did you get so good at roasting? >> I grew up in Philly. >> Okay, okay, okay. >> [laughter] >> It's a language of love. Like I can't I can't roast you if I don't truly like you. I'll just be mean to you. It's different. >> Right. >> Yeah. >> And in Philly it's like a give or take.

31 Like everybody's doing it to each other. You're not the only bully of the school. >> No, we all That's just how we communicated and now out here they're like, what the hell? >> They're like, my god, you hate me. >> Yeah, it was also like my family's love language and stuff. It just It just It just It just comes very natural. >> So you had to defeat like uh like all the women in the tournament and then you had to go up against guys? >> Yeah, so the way I got the belt, I had done two roasts prior, but then when it came for like the belt time, they had the King of Zing and they had the Queen of Mean. So it was like 10 female comedians and it was like one-v-one and then whoever got knocked out, next person went up, whoever got knocked out, next person went up. >> How much time do you have per person? >> Uh you get Those ones were Was it three jokes? I think it was three jokes or that might have been one cuz it was it was it was a zinger. I think it was three jokes though and it was three jokes and then I came in like number six or seven. So I had to knock out uh like

21 three women and a gay and I got the Queen of Mean and then I went against the King of Zing and that's how I got the belt originally and then I had a a new defender and I defeated him and then now uh there's the women's champ Meelad D. Uh she and I are going to go head-to-head on Halloween. >> Wow. >> Yeah. >> Is that one of those things where you go until the other person is speechless or is it they both tears tears? >> [laughter] >> Or is it like they both get their three jokes out and then it's up to the audience to cheer or whatever? >> Yeah, there's judges and like the judges will, you know, whoever won, but it really goes off of like the crowd's reaction. >> Yeah. >> Uh but um what was the question? >> [laughter] >> If it Yeah, if do you get your jokes out or do you try to like stump the person? >> Oh, yeah. It's like you get like three jokes for your rebuttals or like four jokes for rebuttals depending. But I remember the one I went against Evan Connelley and like I just kept going.

11 Like I had more, so I was like, "No, KEEP GOING. KEEP GOING." >> BURYING HIM. >> YEAH, YEAH, YEAH. SO, he did his jokes and he had solid jokes, but I was just like, "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." >> Has anybody ever gotten up with you afterwards been like, "Yo, that's kind of far." >> Yes. Yes. So, at the Queen of Mean one, um I roasted this very funny comic Brittany Doss and I had made a joke about like her dating life and she was not happy with me after. It was the second we got off stage. I just said like who she dated. I said something along the lines of like uh she was like known for dating this like open mic comic and now she's dating this like headliner and I forget what the punchline was, but uh she was not happy with me. We're cool now, but she immediately when we got off stage, she was like, "What the hell, bro?" I was like, "My [laughter] bad." >> One of our One of our friends Anthony would love you because he loves getting roasted. >> Yeah. >> next time we have >> He has like the sadist or the

01 masochistic vibe? >> Sadist. >> Oh, you know what like you know people that like being whipped? >> Like a good like dominatrix. >> Verbally though. Verbally. >> Yeah, yeah. Verbal abuse. Love that. >> Wow, so she probably saw it as like a below the belt comment that >> Yeah, I guess like I >> But everything There's nothing off LIMITS THOUGH. >> YEAH, THAT'S HOW I feel. Like anything goes and there are some people like before you do a roast, you're like, "Hey, do you want to meet up? Like maybe we can talk about like things you can't say or like blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." Or to get to know each other. >> Rules of engagement. >> Yeah. And so, I did I was like, "Hey, do you want to meet up this week?" And like it didn't work out, so I was just like, "All right. Like I have my jokes." And I did my jokes and she was not very >> Has it ever happened to you where something stung a little bit extra for you? >> No. No. I know I don't Yeah. I can Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's nothing that'll There's nothing that'll rattle me. >> She has a comedy shield. >> I Yeah, I'm very secure in who I am as a person that like when I go home and look in the mirror, your joke about me looking like Erica Kirk is not going to

51 offend [laughter] me at all. >> That's sick. That's awesome. That's why I can't do comedy. >> That's why? >> I'll try I'll try to choke everybody. >> OH, YOU'RE >> I GET SO MAD. >> The physical [laughter] violence, yeah. >> What did you just say? And then you're also hosting at the Jimmy Kimmel Comedy Club, right? >> Yeah, currently I'm hosting the open mic that's there every week, 5:00 to 7:00 Thursdays. Um and I do I get to feature and host there pretty frequently. They're very very good to me. I get to like play there a lot, so I love yeah. >> That's nice. That's really cool. >> Yeah. >> Funny like little side story. So like when we went to that haunted brunch show, they had this one character actor girl who's like she's dressed up as like some scary Was it one of the twins of like >> The Shining, yeah, the red rum, yeah. >> So she's walking around the room real quiet. There's like, you know, eerie music going on and she it's like very spooky. She's kind of making her rounds.

43 And then there's a point where obviously you could tell that she's about to grab this purse off the table that belongs to like one of the audience members. It's just like watching. And you could tell that she's like sneaking up to it and you're like, oh, that's going to be funny. She's going to grab the bag and like maybe run away with it and then it's going to be like, haha, it's crazy. But for some reason this this lady really wasn't having it. And as soon as she grabbed the bag, that lady grabbed it too. And I guess like the performer wasn't prepared for that cuz she was already committed to pulling it away and took the lady with the baggage. >> OH, SHE THREW her out of her chair down onto the floor, dude. Yeah, it was it was so funny. >> And we we actually have IT ON VIDEO. >> YES! [screaming] PLAY THE VIDEO. >> Came with the receipts. >> She does this all the time. She'll take gum, she'll take a fork. Like it's very like it happens all the time. >> it's right here. Ronald's the one who's

34 filming this, but look. >> [music] [music] >> OH, >> [laughter] >> WAS SHE STAYING IN >> SHE'S ON THE GROUND. SHE'S ON THE GROUND. >> Staying in character? >> Yeah, dude. >> [laughter] >> But it was But it was dead silent after that. >> that you have this video cuz you don't even understand. Like so I was backstage when this happened and like I didn't get the full I was like what Like she was the the performer Khalila, very talented dancer. She was devastated, dude. She was very upset. Like she's a very like kind person and like she was so sad. And

24 I remember we were back there and I was like, "Khalila, it's fine. Let me tell you a story. Like last week I was roasting this guy. I was calling him slow. Like I thought he was drunk at a show. Da da da." Turns out he like is wildly autistic. And like so like it happens. Like things just like happen. But she Dude, it was so funny cuz the second you told me you were like, "I was at a show and there was an incident." And I was like, "Oh my god! [screaming] PLEASE TELL ME IT'S THE ONE where the lady fell out of the chair." And so I like I messaged her immediately. I was like, "Hey, tell me you're having a good day cuz I have something to show you." And I sent her the video. She's like, "I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS EXISTS IN LIKE PERPETUITY. Like there's no way." But even funnier, I went to see Khalila at another show she was in Showgirls and the parody of Showgirls. And I went to see it and there's a there's a number where she and someone else like get up on a chair. They like grab a chair from the audience. They like kick someone out of their chair, get up on the chair. And Khalila [snorts] did it and she got up on the chair and then on her way down she fell out of the chair. So I was

14 like, "Aw, that was your And she's fine. But like it was like, "Aw, there's your karma for you." >> All right, yeah. >> In a fun way. In a fun way. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was really like cuz you know nobody wanted to laugh at that poor woman. >> Yeah. >> IT GOT TENSE. >> IT GOT REAL TENSE REAL QUICK. >> WELL, you don't know how to behave cuz you're like, "I know that's not supposed to happen and I don't want to ruin the vibe in here either." >> Yeah. It was That lady must have had something in her bag that she didn't >> That's what I'm saying. What was in her bag? Like a gun or something? >> Maybe, you know, but yeah. >> Cuz you guys have done that gag before and that didn't >> All the time. All the time. It's never And like it's usually like she takes like their fork, she takes their knife, she takes a piece of gum, she comes back chewing it. Like what like funny things happen, but that's the first time someone was like, "Nope." >> [laughter] >> And this show actually moved venues, correct? >> Yeah, so that was when it was at The show has had many a home. It started at Nightmare Cafe, which no longer exists.

04 So it started at Nightmare Cafe, went over to House of Blues at Mandalay. Then we went to Composer's Room. Then it was at Magician's Room. And then starting next month, end of this month, it'll be at the Rio. >> Oh, at Rio. Okay, nice. And is your role in it similar to what I saw that day? Where you're hosting, you're in the in between for everything? >> Yeah, so I'm the I'm the spirit guide, right? I'm the like, "Hey, I'm your like comedic relief. I'm your like, I'll take you along this journey. I'm the Hey, they're getting ready backstage. Let me buy them some time to costume change." And then come out and do their thing. >> So what does your average week look like because I feel like most Vegas people are like this where it's gig to gig to gig, but like where are you at during the week like >> Everywhere. Everywhere and anywhere that I can be. It is it is like I'm just gig work all the time. So if it's in arena hosting, I act, I uh >> Is there acting jobs out here? >> There are, surprisingly. No, I I

56 honestly don't think I've ever booked an acting job in LA. I get enough out here. >> Like casino B roll? Like you're just playing blackjack? >> You Well, there are there's a lot of that. Hacks. I was on so many episodes of Hacks. >> Oh, Hacks. Yeah, because they film Hacks out here. >> Yes, but one of my one of my favorite moments is that So I was a big fan of Hacks, obviously female comedian in Las Vegas. >> really funny show, yeah. >> Uh the leading lady is aside, Deborah Vance. I can't think of her real name right now, Jean Smart. She's like a Philly girl, too. So I was like like I just have so much love for Hacks. So the very they just had their final season and they filmed it in Vegas or lots of it in Vegas. and the final scene of the final episode, they're like walking away and I'm in that scene just as background, but I'm in that scene as they're walking away. I'm like the last thing and I'm like walking with them. I'm like, "Yeah, girlies, I got you. I'll I'll continue the female comedian scene in Las Vegas." It's like my little

46 like, "I got you." >> But yeah. >> Yeah. >> And then so for acting and then whenever there's a opportunity to stand up, you're always going for it? >> Yeah, so stand like for me like stand up is my number one. Like that's the main thing. Those are the things I'm going to go for. Uh but I host a lot of convention work, too. Like in Las Vegas, like that just like to fill in the time and pay the bills. Like it's I'm just I'm all over the place. >> That's cool. >> My my weeks are never the same. Like it's very >> That keeps it like fun. There's >> Yeah, at least you're not getting sick of one place ever, right? >> I Yeah, and I like I would last at a job like 6 months. I'm like, "All right, what's next?" Like I'm I'm done here. >> do at the conventions and stuff? >> Uh usually like I'll do a lot of like they call it booth candy. Uh but like they come on over and blah blah blah. But I do do hosting stuff, too. Like a really cool one I got to do was for these uh Have you seen these like displays that are like LED fans and

36 >> Uh-huh, yeah. They'll have graphics. >> Yeah, so I did one for them. They like have the biggest one at the sphere and stuff like that and they had a like a AI avatar on there and I was like sitting up on the stage with a microphone like communicating with the avatar. Like yeah, so lots of host MC type stuff. >> I see. I see. That's cool. That's awesome. >> That's cool. I like your hustler I like your hustler schedule. >> Thanks. >> Summerlin hustlers. >> [laughter] >> He also lives in Summerlin. >> Ah, yeah, you know, yeah. We Don't tell people that. >> [laughter] >> Yeah. You could probably smell it, right? That's That's kept Vegas' best kept secret. >> You probably drive a Tesla and you drive it too slow. That's exactly what it is. >> Teslas and new paint from the homes. >> And you can't park your car in your driveway. That's a thing. >> Didn't you say that it was a thing where all the women have white Teslas with their realtor logo on the side? >> At school drop-off, absolutely they do

27 with their big pink logos on the side of their white Teslas. >> White cars is the number one thing. >> It is, huh? >> In Summerlin? >> You'll see you'll be at a traffic light and there's no like 12 white cars. >> Mhm. >> Tesla, Suburban, whatever, Lexus, whatever, just all white cars. >> Yeah, I drive a white SUV. >> [laughter] >> So does my wife. >> Seriously, it's a thing, yeah. >> Yeah, it looks nice. It's neat. >> Yeah, cuz it don't show dirt at all. >> Did I miss anything else that you're currently juggling at the moment? >> Uh kiddos, I've got two of those. So they you know play a pretty important role in in life and everything like that. >> How old are they? >> Six and seven. >> Oh no. >> Really? Like right around >> Like literally literally IT'S BEEN A ROUGH YEAR, YEAH. >> [laughter] >> THAT'S AWESOME. >> YEAH. >> YEAH, you're and his son's eight. >> Eight. He's about to be nine in a month. >> Aw, yay! We're right behind you. >> He loves roasts, so it'd be sick if you guys ever did a roast battle.

17 >> Really? I'll roast a nine-year-old all day. All day, let's go. >> I told him that. I was like I think when you think about roasting with your friends, you guys are just messing around. I'm like if you get with someone good, they're going to hurt you. >> Yeah. >> Cuz I was like I could take it. I was like all right. >> Dude, at this last Roast Battle Mania we had a a comedian Carlos Anthony, very funny guy, and his son, who like I think his son just turned 18 or something, never had talked on a microphone a day in his life, they roasted each other. >> His son? >> Dude, yes. And like Carlos is like a headlining comedian, like he's been in the business for a minute, so it was like okay, challenge accepted. And like to his son's credit, like he held his own. It was really really cool to watch. Like Carlos obviously won, but like it was really cool to watch. It was like yeah, you think you could do this? Let's go, yeah. >> What kind of roasts does Taika have on you? >> Uh well like you know like me taking forever to take a I'm on a roller coaster, like

08 >> On a roller coaster? >> Well he thinks that I I I I my dumps are so long that like I'm just on a roller COASTER INSIDE GOING OH MY GOD, THAT'S FOREVER. Like or if I go like hey uh like let's say I tell >> shoot you did. >> Yeah, I'll tell my wife like I I got to take a dump real quick and then my dad I mean uh not my dad my son will be like all right, see you tomorrow. >> Oh, that's funny. >> Yeah. >> That's his [laughter] roast. >> He has a comedic mind though. He does. He really does. He'd be good. Would your kids be good at roasting? >> Oh, yeah, absolutely, dude. >> Do they have the Philly in them? >> I TRY TO INSTILL IT. I TRY TO instill it. Yeah, that's why I'm like they they like the Raiders. So, I'm like yeah, grow up a Raiders fan. Like you got to be a losing team. >> [laughter] >> So, you can appreciate it. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> Yeah, because it's such an emotional catharsis when they finally win, right? >> Yep, exact exactly. You got to earn it. You can't just come in hot. Yeah. >> How how like how did you feel when um

00 Philly won the Super Bowl? >> I was blacked out of my mind. And I So, I was at a Patriots bar when the 2018 Super Bowl happened. And like we I was like 2 months into this brand new job that I super super liked. My whole family went back home to Philly for the Super Bowl. And I was I was like what the hell, I'm here alone. I went to a Patriots bar with like all these Patriots fans. There was me and another guy named Rocky who were the only Eagles fans there. Yeah, which is also my daughter's name. But now, she wasn't she didn't exist at the time. But so, we were in a Patriots bar. So, like being able to be surrounded by Pats fans and then the Eagles winning it in their face >> Oh, THAT'S NICE. OH, NICE. >> DUDE, DUDE. YEAH, I'M NOT ALLOWED BACK AT that bar. But I had a great time. Me and Rocky, man. >> They banned They banned both of you? >> I think Rocky was fine, but me personally, no, you know. >> You're in their face. In your face.

50 >> That It was my TIME TO TALK Like I you sit your asses down. You've had your dynasty. Sit down and take it. >> [laughter] >> That's nice. Well, you guys have met Haley Brooks.
